About this deal

Game of Death Revisited (HD, 39 min) is a look at an earlier attempt to reassembly Lee's original footage back in 200 for the Japanese film Bruce Lee in G. Due to that, this HDR10 presentation is rather inconsistent because those aforementioned elements have not aged well and distractingly stand out, looking significantly blurry and littered with various scratches and bits of dirt. This definitive collection, featuring fresh and exclusive 4K restorations by Arrow Video from the best available film materials, hours of brand new bonus features and previously unreleased footage - including the extended Mandarin Cut of The Big Boss, now ten minutes longer than any version ever released on video worldwide, and the never-before-seen 'log fight' from the original Game of Death shoot - is the ultimate tribute to Bruce Lee's enduring legacy and fruitful collaboration with Golden Harvest. The restoration work on the original camera negative yields clarity and levels of fine detail in the images that are out of this world.

Black levels fair a bit better and look darker with strong shadow details, even during those intentional moments where shadows obscure the "Lee-alike" actors.Sure, there’s still a lot of stuff out there on Lee – some of which is notably on Criterion’s recent boxset – which again, likely rights issues preclude their being here, but the combination of the archive supplementals that have been sourced and the staggeringly good new features included here really should satisfy all but the most ravenous of Lee fans.

It's difficult to say whether or not the untimely death of Lee prior to the film’s release added to the legend of both the man and the film or not. Alternate Credit Sequence (HD, 8 min) houses four different opening credits that were produced over the years since the film's original release. The rest are Blu-rays with also excellent audio and video presentations of each, four of which are bonus discs housing exhaustive featurettes and alternate versions of the aforementioned Bruceploitation movies.Lee's third movie arrives with a strong and generally satisfying 4K transfer, but compared to the others in the set, this is sadly the weakest of the bunch, falling on the softer side and occasionally looking out of focus with only a few pockets of sharp clarity, most of which come from close-ups or some exterior shots. The story is a simple one but it’s effectively told and gives the appropriate weight to the fight scenes.

Getting all the actual Lee footage out of the way in the first act (and up until then its more of the same from the previous film, using shadows, ‘relaxed focus’ and anything it could waft in front of the camera to mask the obvious stand in), the rest of the film is actually a deliciously gonzo fight fest. NEW Axis of English: The Hong Kong Dubs (2160p, 42 min) is a new video essay written and narrated by Will Offutt, examining the dubbing of Lee's first three movies. One of the fun things about the last few Lee films, especially Enter the Dragon and Way of the Dragon, you get to see a very young Chuck Norris going toe-to-toe with Bruce Lee! The Hong Kong Connection (1080i/60, 19 min) is a 2003 featurette with cast and crew interviews remembering Lee.

So while Fist of Fury looks slightly cooler thanks to its more muted colour palette and the fact its shot all indoors on soundstages as opposed to the wonderful backdrop of the forests of Thailand for The Big Boss, both look utterly fantastic (despite a faint vertical stripe of lighter colour patches on the film on The Big Boss at the 11 min that lasts for about 10 seconds), the restoration work undertaken yielding stunning results on both films. None the actors come close to matching Bruce Lee's impressive kicking and punching speed, demonstrating why he is and forever will be the unrivalled and inimitable legend that he is.
